Chronologies on the Montclair Artwork Museum – The Artsology Weblog

I simply acquired a press launch that the Montclair Artwork Museum’s latest pictures exhibition is formally open to the general public: “Meryl McMaster: Chronologies” shall be on view via September 17, 2023. As described by MAM, “Meryl McMaster crosses timescales along with her dreamlike photographic self-portraiture. Working in Quebec and drawing from her nehiyaw (Plains Cree), British, and Dutch ancestry, she constructs ingenious sculptural clothes and props to make use of in her large-format photographs. She then travels to site-specific landscapes necessary to household and cross-cultural historical past, sporting her ensembles for cinematic scenes grounded in place, lineage, and the pure world.”

That includes eleven prior and new photographic works in addition to poetry and video, this exhibition explores the artist’s disruption of time. The brand new works are from her 2022 collection “Tales of my Grandmothers | nōhkominak ācimowina”– and is their first displaying in the US. On this collection, McMaster reassembles household tales from photographs, objects, and written and oral accounts of her Métis and Plains Cree grandmothers, recognizing the resilience of those ladies amid colonial duress.
